This blog has been established to provide information about the programs and educational philosophy of Open Fields School <www.openfields.org>  in Thetford, Vermont, a Vermont Independent School since 1971.  Open Fields School is an alternative elementary school open to children aged 4 to 12 years. The unusual curriculum includes a combination of small individualized classes and facilitated play in an enriched educational environment that includes students of diverse ages. The curriculum was developed in the 1970’s by  the Director, Jean Aull.  The voice of this blog is that of Mary Drake Layton. She has been a teacher at the school for twenty years who will be sharing her perspective on how this innovative program functions and her belief in its value to children and to the future of education.
